Heisig groups roughly half the kanji according to “signal primitives” that signal a certain Chinese reading. I looked at the beginning of Sanshiro rememberign this kanji list as a base — with the Aozora Bunko text, you can read the first 17 pages before coming to a kanji with no furigana that you wouldn’t know if you knew those and nothing else.
