We are told that Siegfried once fought a dragon, but this happened before the story began. Kriemhild just wants revenge for her murdered husband, and when she finally achieves it by chopping off the murderer’s head, her own ally turns wl her and hacks her to bits because it’s dishonorable to be killed by a woman.
Lists sl This Book. Alas, you have wronged your kinsmen so that all who are born in days to come will be dishonoured by your deed.
It would make a good anti-war poem, or a critique on male machismo. It would make lo good moral tale about the horrifying nature of revenge that eats up fl families and communities. Neither Gunther nor Etzel has much taste for conflict, and both are led into it by the actions of their wives.
These men aren’t knights; they’re mercenaries. There is no suggestion that this is the nature of women, or that this is what happens when women get power.
Oh, and no one has that much money. I was delighted with this book; however, towards the end I did find it all to escalate very quickly and felt tired with it.
El Cantar de los Nibelungos (Sepan Cuantos, #285)
Mibelungos writer presents us with a tragic event, ominously anticipated in every section of the poem, but it is not clear what we are supposed to think about it. Characterisation is also confused and inconsistent. As well as the story, this volume includes over pages of critical analysis, which will give the reader a lot of background kos on the poem. And maybe someday I’ll even give it a try in german – the verse may make quite a bit of difference.

Many characters get re-introduced cantarr and time again, as if the poet is afraid we’ll forget who everyone is; he repeats himself ad nauseam, with little ominous passages that become incredibly annoying: Kleidung scheint damals eine geradezu unglaubliche Rolle gespielt zu haben, wie der Autor immer wieder die Pracht dieser oder jener Kleidung beschreibt, klingt fast schon ironisch.
What annoyed me the most was that the knights were so dishonest and decided they were just going to pretend they never plotted to kill Siegfried and that Siegfried died at the hands of robbers. Also, the “rules” of narrative are very different from what one would expect from a modern cantzr – there is no attempt to build suspense, outcomes are announced well in advance of the action taking place, and characters behave under a very different set of societal mores. We can forgive absurdities in the story as they are no worse than those found in most mythology.

However even he is subservient to another king. Poema aleman Spanish Edition. I had more fun with Poetic Edda than with this and I was honestly trying so hard not to mark is as not finished. However the poem is not full of diatribes against women.

The warriors, while chopping each other up a la ee Python and the Holy Grail” still manage snarky comments and lengthy, emotive soliloquies with their dying breaths. This story is a bit wordy and sometimes does not make sense but it is the best we have from the period so read it.
Siegfried, crown prince of Xanten, travels to Burgundy seeking power and the hand of Kriemhild, sister to the Burgundian king, Gunther. Shopbop Designer Fashion Brands. I cannot judge its accuracy, of course and even less of the translator’s often unnecessary derisive remarks the weird sportsman comparison??? Shakespeare would have done wonders with this However, if you’re sitting down to read it all canntar yourself, even if you take these conditions into consideration, it still doesn’t do the text itself any favours, and it doesn’t make for an exactly fluid reading.
This book is not yet featured on Listopia.
I prefer the original Islandic legend, here you can sense the high level of religious influence which feels repetitive after a while.

It didn’t even include the fabled dragonslaying! First of all, one against this translation. The Norse version in my modern opinion is vastly superior, with its intervention by pagan gods in a causative way, with absolutely nothing for modern states to use to their own advantage and the world’s disadvantage, and really, no hero standing out as different from the heroic desire of all Vikings: Wells keinen Bock mehr habe.
However, since I love the Norse tale, with all its pre-history of Sigurd the Norse Siegfriedwhich has strong similarities to the Egyptian Isis myth, I really can’t toss the Nibelungenlied. Overall, this is an enjoyable read, but perhaps not a light read, and it is likely to be enjoyed porfua those who enjoy “The Song of Roland” or “Beowulf” or Homer.
We cannot expect a medieval fl to be written in a manner that satisfies our contemporary preferences. I hope Hatto’s version will be better than this because cantaf lay itself I do like and it pains me a bit to only give the Nibelungenlied 3 stars. The thing is just that Hochdeutsch doesn’t seem to conform to rhyme so much, and in order to make the text rhyme, things like proper sentence order had to be sacrificed. However, it is an interesting and engaging read overall with some strong female characters for its time at least and I’d encourage you to give it a shot.
Here’s a story that’s flawed in every respect, yet manages to be a fairly endearing read–if you are interested in mythology, that is.
