Updike gives a perfect view of American life on the cusp of the 80s – sunken living rooms, smoking while pregnant, the gas crisis. And while I wasn’t around at the time, I thought Updike’s evocation of the mood of the time more convincing than in the previous novel. As often as I paused in disgust at Rabbit’s latest thoughts, I also paused to muse about these stunning sentences that make some of Rabbit’s dilemmas all too human.

His descriptions of human relationships are among the most realistic I have ever read. I guess the 70’s were supposed to be the decade of sexual experimentation; throughout the novel, Updike’s characters are having the kind of sweaty, orgasmic, kinky sex that, if portrayed on film, might be shown in a seedy theater on the wrong side of town.

And of course the sex. Updike’s novel takes the Pulitzer for literature and I won’t quibble with that. That doesn’t mean Coniglo have to like it, and I certainly didn’t. Bush showdown that November. But ah, that prose.
Rabbit Is Rich
Rabbit finally has the adult voice Updike should have given him Rabbit Redux, but let’s just call that regrettable book a ’60s indiscretion. I think many men are the same, and it must be disorienting to a modern joh reading this book, because, as much as she would like to think, not much has changed.
John Cniglio was a gallery-goer of genius. Maybe the dead are gods, there’s certainly something kind about them, the way they give you room.
