Return to Book Page. The baby of the family definitely occupies a prized position tbe the household. At last we can rest easy knowing that Lena has flourished into a proud, hopeful woman and has escaped the influence of her mother.

D Ronald rated it liked it Aug 25, Tina McPherson is born in the Black hospital of a small town in Georgia with a caul over her face, and is from day one recognized as a “special” child. Hart 4 Birth, Veil, and Tea Where we begin to diverge from the black-and-white analyses of the poem and story, the real argument of the paper follows.
Ansa launched an independent publishing company, DownSouth Press, with its focus on African-American literature — fiction and nonfiction. So we have these women, all helping Lena develop her sense of self as a caulbearer and a black womanmfelroy opposed to Nellie who we can posit deep down just wants Lena to be normal.
I read this when I was coming down from The Salt Eaterswhich I’ll anea the first to admit is a tough act to follow. Ships from and sold by Amazon. I’m not sure I really liked oc, but Mcflroy did appreciate getting a better understanding of African Ame This is not something that I would have picked up on my own, but somehow it ended up on my to-read list.
This focus on the past draws our focus to those forgotten queens.
